What they do well

n8n is the automation platform you can actually own. Fair-code, self-host, source available, code nodes when the canvas is not enough: an engineer can put the runtime next to the database, keep credentials in their vault, and not send customer data to a SaaS orchestrator. That is a legitimate answer to “our data cannot leave.”

Debugging is a workflow JSON you can grep. You can fork. You are not waiting on our roadmap for a weird internal HTTP API. For a company that already operates software, n8n is often the most honest automation buy — cheaper than a consultancy, more controllable than Zapier Cloud, more engineer-native than Make. We should say that before we say anything else.

When to choose them

Choose n8n when you have someone who will operate it (updates, queues, credentials, failed executions) and when data residency or code-level control is a hard requirement. Choose it instead of us for the long tail of internal APIs that will never get a catalog SKU, for air-gapped or strict egress environments, and for teams whose differentiator is the workflow layer.

Choose Cloud vs self-host based on whether they want to operate a runtime; this page must not smear that distinction. If two engineers already live in n8n and the judged jobs are 10% of the graph, leave the graph. Buy SKUs only for the 10% if those SKUs are clearly better than the nodes they wrote.

Where you strand

n8n is a workshop with a runtime. The business still specifies the job, still evaluates output, still retrains the “AI node” when the model changes. Self-hosting moves the bill from a vendor to an engineer calendar. The 4h/month in the hours cell is the quiet tax; the 6h is the product backlog of workflows the business thinks are “already automated” because n8n exists.

There is no published accuracy number on a community workflow. There is no phone number whose job is “your AP coding was wrong.” When the engineer who owns n8n is the same two people keeping billing alive, every new workflow competes with the product. You have freedom, and the freedom is a staffing plan.

04 — Migration / 5 steps

Complement first. Migration is surgical.

  1. Keep n8n as the pipe for anything custom, internal, or residency-constrained.
  2. Do not “migrate n8n to nox.markets.” That sentence is a red flag. You migrate a job.
  3. If a workflow is already correct and self-hosted for a reason (bank files, PII), look at our self-hosted SKUs (Tiedown is the current example) before proposing connected. If Tiedown is a downgrade from a working n8n rec, say so and walk away.
  4. For a judged cloud-OK job (AP mailbox, AR reminders), run the SKU in parallel, then disable the n8n workflow that did the same write. Leave everything else.
  5. Engineering policy: commodity jobs are a purchase; n8n backlog is for what customers pay them for. Write that down or the 6h/month never dies.

    You pay for a finished, evaluated job and for not staffing the runtime. $0 software + 10h/month of engineer time is not $0. If that engineer time is already budgeted and happy, n8n wins. If it is the same two people keeping billing alive, it does not.

  • 02You have self-hosted too. Isn't that n8n with a nicer name?open

    No. self-hosted on a catalog record is a licence to run that product in their environment (Tiedown: bank rec packet). n8n is a general orchestrator. We do not ship an n8n replacement, and this page must not imply we do.

  • 03Will you give us the workflow source so we can run it in n8n?open

    Not as a default. Export of configuration and output history is the exit hatch. Re-implementing a SKU as n8n nodes is a project — which is what they were trying not to start.
